A hospital trust has started filling wards with extra doctors after struggling to cope with demands on its A&E department.
The Heart of England NHS Trust has some of the worst A&E response times in England. Figures revealed last week showed it managed to see only 88% of patients within four hours, across its three sites in Birmingham.
Dr Aidan McNamara, from the emergency medicine department at Heartlands Hospital, said: “There’s always pressure.
“We look at it as an important performance standard and it reflects on the whole of the healthcare system.”
